independence day

I happen to think that I live in one of the best cities in the country. We are situated five minutes away from Columbus, Ohio (the state capital and fifteenth largest U.S. city,) but there's still that special small town feel. There's a great sense of community, an amazing school system, but most importantly, a Fourth of July celebration like no other. People start lining the parade route streets with lawn chairs and caution tape two weeks before the Fourth and we pretty much shut down the city all day. It's definitely one of my favorite holidays simply because I look forward to spending the day celebrating the traditions with my friends and family. Here are some of my favorite pics from the day. (I know that this is a little late, but I wanted to share the pictures regardless!)

iphoneography: the great debate

Ever since the launch and popularity of Instagram a few years ago, I've had some beef with the idea of "iPhoneography," or iPhone photography. Coming from someone who takes a lot of pride in and spends a lot of time and money on her own photography, it was really frustrating for me to see people around me equipped with nothing but an iPhone and a handful of crappy filters calling themselves photographers. I hesitated to give in to the trend when finally upgraded to an iPhone two years ago, but since then there have been so many changes to the world of iPhoneography that it was hard not to want to get involved. I realized after getting an Instagram and exploring this medium that iPhoneography really is a new frontier in the world of photography. While I will still argue that it's still not the same as the more traditional route, I think that iPhoneography is just as vaild. If it helps to expose people (photography pun not intended) to the world of photography, then all is well.

Over the past couple of years, I've come to love iPhonegraphy. It's a great option for snapping pics along with my DSLR. I love trying new photo editing apps and experimenting with iPhoneography specific products to make that little picture look exactly how I want it. Sometimes it's fun to compare some of my iPhone photos to my more "professional" pictures just to see the similarities in quality. It's crazy to see how far technology has come! Below are just a few examples of this:

The bottom line is if you were like me, refusing to investigate out of bitterness and feeling superior, get over yourself. I did and I haven't regretted it yet. Experiment with of all of the creative outlets you have at your disposal, whether it be film, digital, or your handy iPhone. Art is one of the only things we've got going for us. We might as well take advantage of everything we've got.

face study

This semester I'm taking a class all about Photoshop,which I'm pretty excited about. We have to pick focus areas to take 72 pictures of every two weeks, so I picked selfies. I chose selfies for two reasons. One is that if I'm my own model I can shoot whenever I want. Two is I've always struggled with taking self portraits. I'll like the way I look in the mirror, but then when I take a picture, I'm never content. Hopefully, this process will help me to get over that.

ps. I've started uploading to my blog and my YouTube channel again. Crazy, I know!

This past weekend I was at the 2013 HOBY Ohio South seminar on staff. I feel so privileged to be a part of this program. These people are my family. I look forward to this weekend every year.

Finally getting into a regular shooting schedule again! I've been keeping my promise and shooting as much as I can, but not much I want to share.
Melanie took me to a secret hideaway to take pictures for class. I love urban exploration, but I get such terrible anxiety during it, thinking that I'm going to get caught. It's totally worth it at the end of the day though when I look back and see what I've shot.
